ADDENDUM TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR ADMISSION INTO POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES FOR THE 2025/2026 ACADEMIC SESSION

This is to inform the general public, prospective applicants, and suitably qualified candidates that following the approval for the commencement of additional postgraduate programmes by the Senate of Federal University Lokoja, the College of Postgraduate Studies hereby announces the inclusion of the following programmes as an addendum to the earlier advertisement for admission into postgraduate programmes for the 2025/2026 Academic Session. Applications are therefore invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into the following newly approved postgraduate programmes:

FACULTY OF COMMUNICATION & MEDIA STUDIES

1. Department of Mass Communication
2. PGD in Mass Communication
3. M.Sc. in Mass Communication
4. Ph.D. in Mass Communication

Admission Requirements:
Applicants must possess relevant academic qualifications in Mass Communication, Communication Studies, Journalism, or related disciplines.

FACULTY OF LIFE SCIENCE

1. Department of Biotechnology
2. Sc. Biotechnology
3. D. Biotechnology

Admission Requirements:

Applicants for the M.Sc. Biotechnology programme must possess a minimum of a Second Class Honours degree in Biotechnology, Life Sciences, Agriculture, Human or Veterinary Medicine, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or any other related discipline from a recognized university. For admission into the Ph.D. Biotechnology programme, candidates must hold an M.Sc. degree in Biotechnology or a closely related Life Science discipline from a recognized university, with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale or its equivalent, as may be approved by the College of Postgraduate Studies, Federal University Lokoja.

2. Department of Botany

Master of Science (M.Sc.) Programmes with specialize in any of the following options:

1. Mycology/Plant Pathology
2. Environmental Botany
3. Plant Taxonomy/Biosystematics

Admission Requirements:

Applicants must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Botany or related disciplines from a recognized University with at least Second Class Lower Division or its equivalent.

Department of Microbiology

1. PGD in Microbiology
2. M.Sc. in Medical Microbiology
3. M.Sc. in Environmental and Public Health Microbiology
4. M.Sc. in Food and Industrial Microbiology
5. Ph.D. in Medical Microbiology
6. Ph.D. in Environmental and Public Health Microbiology
7. Ph.D. in Food and Industrial Microbiology

Admission Requirements:

Applicants must possess relevant academic qualifications in Microbiology or allied disciplines.

FACULTY OF PHYSICAL SCIENCE

Department of Biochemistry

1. Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Biochemistry
2. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Biochemistry

Admission Requirements:

Applicants must possess relevant qualifications in Biochemistry or related disciplines from recognized institutions.

5. Department of Geology

Professional Master’s Programmes in the following areas:

1. Master of Oil and Gas Management
2. Master of Mineral Resources Management
3. Master of Environmental Resources Management
4. Master of Water Resources Management

Admission Requirements:

Applicants must possess a good Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Management Sciences, or related disciplines from recognized institutions.

Department of Physics

1. Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Engineering Physics
2. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Engineering Physics

Admission Requirements:

Applicants must possess relevant qualifications in Physics, Engineering Physics, Engineering, or related disciplines from recognized institutions.

FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES

 Department of Sociology

1. Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Sociology

Admission Requirements:

A Bachelor's degree in Sociology or a closely related discipline (Criminology, Demography, Social Work, and Anthropology) from Federal University Lokoja or any other recognized university, with a minimum of a Second Class Honours (Lower Division) not below 3.0 CGPA on a 5-point scale.

Applications should be completed online through the University’s postgraduate admissions portal within the stipulated application period.

GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

(a) Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) 

The Postgraduate Diploma Programme lasts for a minimum of two (2) Semesters and a maximum of four (4) Semesters. An applicant must possess a first degree not below a Third Class or an HND not below Lower Credit in a related discipline from a recognized institution, along with an NYSC Discharge/Exemption Certificate. A candidate must also have credits in English Language, Mathematics, and three (3) other relevant subjects at the O’ Level.

(b) Master’s Degree (Academic and Professional) 

The Master’s Degree Programme is available for both Full-time and Part-time candidates. Full-time candidates require a minimum of four (4) Semesters and a maximum of six (6) Semesters, while Part-time candidates require a minimum of six (6) Semesters and a maximum of eleven (11) Semesters. All Master's Degree programmes include coursework. The following individuals may qualify for admission:

• Graduates of Federal University Lokoja or other recognized institutions who have earned a Bachelor's Degree with at least a Second-Class Division or equivalent. Candidates with a University Degree and a relevant Postgraduate Diploma from FUL or other recognized institutions, with at least a credit pass, may also qualify.
• Candidates with a Third-Class Bachelor's Degree and a relevant Postgraduate Diploma.
• Candidates with unclassified degrees averaging "C" or 50 and above, who may be required to take qualifying tests.
• Candidates must have five (5) relevant O’ Level credits, including English and Mathematics.
• NYSC Discharge/Exemption Certificate.
• Candidates may need to pass a Departmental Examination to determine their suitability for postgraduate studies.
• Candidates with other acceptable qualifications approved by the University Senate.

 (c) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) 

The Ph.D. Programme runs for a minimum of six (6) Semesters and a maximum of ten (10) Semesters. Relevant courses may be prescribed, and a Thesis is required at the end of the programme. The following individuals may qualify for admission:

• Graduates of Federal University Lokoja or other recognized institutions who have obtained a good Master’s degree (Academic) with a CGPA of not less than 4.0 on a 5-point scale or 3.0 on a 4-point scale, appropriate to the proposed area of study.
• Graduates of Federal University Lokoja or other recognized institutions with a Master of Philosophy degree relevant to the proposed area of study.
• In addition, candidates must possess a Bachelor's Degree in Second Class Lower Division.
• Candidates must possess five (5) relevant O’ Level credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
• NYSC Discharge/Exemption Certificate.
• Candidates with other acceptable qualifications approved by the University Senate.
